Ao Oni is a Japanese survival horror game with RPG and puzzle elements. Although each version differs heavily from the others, the objective is always the same. Locked in a mansion, you explore and solve puzzles while running from an enigmatic demon. This wiki serves as a. Ao Oni is a horror game made from RPGMaker XP. The Main character, Hiroshi, and his three other friends,Takuro,Takeshi and Mika, decided to visit an abandoned mansion that is rumoured to be haunted, and there is a monster in there. It is puzzle themed horror game and requires skilled use of 'running away' when Ao Oni comes for you.

'We heard a rumor about a mansion on the outskirts of town..
They say there is a monster that lives there.'

The 'R' in Ao Oni R can stand for a lot of things - such as reboot, remake, or retelling, but at its core it is a labor of love. It is the Ao Oni experience everyone knows and loves, having been rebuilt from the ground up in RPG Maker VX Ace to expand upon the original games ideas while giving it a fresh coat of paint. New story elements and areas, graphics, music, sound, puzzles, expanded character backgrounds as well as multiple endings exist in Ao Oni R while still keeping the principles of the original, such as a low amount of dialogue when possible and the possibility of a fast play through.

You are never alone! The Oni always has a chance of appearing! Hide from the immortal demon in lockers, toilet stalls and jail cells, or banish it temporarily using the new item, agrimony.

All puzzles from the classic game return, as well as several new ones! New areas, along with 6 different endings and the ability for any character to die makes for multiple runs!

All the cast have been rewritten to include a wide variety of backgrounds and emotions, each with their own agenda and goals that can be revealed during the game. Anna and Shun also make their video game appearance.

As much as I tried, I have probably failed to squash all the bugs. If you spot any, let me know in the comments. Remember to save constantly, just in case!

I absolutely loved this game. My only problem with it is that.. It's kinda way too easy to save everyone!

It should be challenging to save all the characters. For example, it's actually kinda hard to save Mika, specially if you played the original and go investigate the 2th floor after her scream. It's very well done, in my opinion!

Everyone else, tho.. They just die if you want to!

Anyway, are you still working on the game? :3

That was what I was going for, to give the player the freedom to decide.

Mika was an odd case since in the original she died and became an oni in the basement, so that created ~6 conditions just by the time you reached the basement. The other deaths were actually placeholders but I really liked how they flowed towards the end of development that I kept them. It also burned me out on how buggy her conditions become with all the events that it wore me down trying to fix them.

As for the game, I've tried to work on the DLC and restarted several times from scratch, but I'm just having trouble getting it to a point I like, so I'll probably not release it (sorry)

On the plus side, I have a first draft design completed of a new horror game which I'm happy with as well as two very early survival horror games and a short oc horror titled Floss. I've also been toying with ideas to start an R version of Ao Oni School Nightmare, but that's just thoughts really.

Ohhh, that's really interesting! I would love to play an remake of Ao Oni S! Which characters would be in the game, you think?

Anyway, that makes sense to me. I thought you were going for something like Until Dawn, where saving everyone is hard lol

Ao Oni

But anyway, thanks for this incredible game! :3

What about an Ao Oni 2 R?

Since Ao Oni 2 is a mobile game, the controls are kinda awful, plus the game is on portrait for some reason.

Idk, I think it would be cool to see.

I always have the right amount of powder but nothing happens afterwards, I can not mix it, I do not know if it's a bug or it's something I'm doing wrong.

Stuck on statue puzzle in the old building and need help. Can you tell me about the gold and silver statues?

Push the statue and the torch from the exit area into the medical room. put them on the correct color and push the torch on either block below it.

I really love playing this game. But I just have a problem, whenever I soft reset with F12, the next time I try to load a save file or start a new game, the game will close because of an error that says 'bitmap disposed'?

Sorry, that's a little set back due to the lighting engine that was used, but it was a good trade off. You'll just have to close and reopen the game or load from the menu in game.

Ahh this seems so cool! I look forward to playing this.

I'm actually in the middle of reading the Ao Oni novels, so it excites me to see a game that will feature Shun and Anna!

Stuck on statue puzzle in the old building and need help. Can you tell me about the gold and silver statues?

okay so, im stuck in this weird gun powder puzzle where you have to measure it to a suitable amount, and i just cant understand it, can someone please help

Easiest way is to put only one powder on the scales and then fiddle with the weights until it says both are equal.

Once you know how much a single gunpowder weighs you can then use basic math to measure out what the note on the 2F balcony wants you to measure.

okay, so i dont know if this is a bug or a glitch, but in the old building when you have to combine a rope with a hook in order to get a blue key and climb out, i discovered that before doing that i had to use the rope and the hook to get the study key thats stuck in one of the jailcells, but the thing is, i used the rope and the hook to get the blue key in the basement before getting the study key, and now i cant take back the rope and the hook to advance. so now im stuck and cant do anything unless a replay the entire game again.

The bug I believe is the same as mentioned below, I recently hotfixed it. Also If you stand in front of the area where you picked up the blue key and then select it from the inventory, you can place the key again to unlock the door.

I think I've found a bug or at least a softlock in the game. If you use the rope and hook in the solitary room and deposit the blue key prior to getting the key within the cells, you can't pick up the hook and rope without getting trapped. Beyond that, if you choose to collect the rope and hooke, you get locked in the room, unable to rope up again or open the door. This is the only game breaking bug I've seen up to this point with some collision errors but those aside this is a fantastic remake!

Oh god, just when I thought I was finally done with the bugs lol. Thanks for the report, I'll look over it in the next day or two. I'm glad you like the game, it means a lot.

I am at the part where you can go into the basement, yet everytime Mika screams and gets killed. How do I get Mika to, y'know, not die? It's really bugging me and I want to complete the game with a perfect ending.

It has some bugs, which I'm in the process of fixing but, the way it works is:

You need to ignore the scream and just enter the basement, but there are conditions to it.

-When you hear Mika scream, checking the second floor in the room will always get her killed
-If you enter the basement after the scream without a) having Anna alive, or b) getting the compression kit, then Mika will die
-If Anna is alive, but you don't get Mika the compression kit, she will survive with Anna's help _but_ die towards the end of the game because of her ankle in an alternate/hidden death (my favorite death)
In short, to save Mika, you need to get her the compression kit for her ankle, which can be found in the left hall bathroom where the hiding spot/toilet is and just continue entering the basement after you hear the scream.

Oni

Brilliant! All checks out! Thanks so much, and happy new year!

Ok i'm on the basement part and i got a red gem, i don't know what the fuck to do with it. I think i'm stuck, help anyone?

Sorry for the late reply, doubt you're still stuck by now but if you are:

Red Gem goes into the case in the room next to the basement door (undo the panel with the screwdriver). That will get you the key for the Rumpus Room on the third floor of the mansion.

I have no idea on how to make explosive chemical. I have Gun powder and Powder

You need the correct amount of gun powder measured at the scales in the Doll Makers room (North Hall of the Annex)

The amount you need is revealed on the 2F Balcony of the Annex in a note. (through the Dining Room)

It's just a matter of figuring out what each chunk of gunpowder is worth.

I just can't find the way to get the perfect ending.. I know it's probably connected to the spell somehow, but I still can't find it.. It was a great game regardless! I was a big fan of the original game, but it always bugged me how there was no option to save the gang. Now I can finally make the dream come true :^) This is also beyond amazing for a fan game, I'd even go as far as saying it's better than the original. Bigger map, more story, alive friends.. What more can one ask for?

I'm so glad you liked it. The perfect ending involves needing all six character cards as well as the spell. You get a character card for saving a character from a certain predicament.
There's also lots of stuff to discover, such as an unlockable hell mode for finishing hard, alternate costumes for Hiroshi and several cheats (which can be found in a notepad file in the install folder) Also two fun easter eggs are constantly clicking on the bathroom door before you first encounter the Oni as well as an alternate Mika death scene (which is my favorite) in the basement of the Old Building (Save Anna but don't get Mika the compression kit)

I really liked Ao Oni way back then, and it's so cool to see a remake of it!! Cultist simulator rites. There's only one problem, and it's that when I start the game and type my character's name, it says 'Unable to find file: Graphic/Parallaxes/fog>' and crashes. I tried adding it in manually but it still won't work. I'm using Wine to run this on mac, so maybe that's why, but I couldn't find a fog graphic in the folder anyway. Any ideas?

Okay, it's doing it to me as well., this is odd. Gimme a bit to try and fix it. Thanks for the feedback, I just wish I was informed about this earlier.

I tested the new version and was able to start exploring, so hopefully it's fixed. Thanks for letting me know and don't hesitate to tell me if something else occurs like it.

Hey, it works on my mac now! Just got the Plate Shard and the game looks and plays really good so far, thanks for patching it!

If you are a fan of horror games, Ao Oni is certainly a game you have to check out. Ao Oni actually was first released around 10 years ago, but the game is still pretty popular to this day.

Dumb Teenagers!

One of the things that is pretty amusing about Ao Oni is the plot. The game is not as story driven as I would have liked, but the less is more approach does kind of work for this game. The character that you are playing as is called Hiroshi and one evening he and a few of his friends think that it is a good idea one evening to check out a haunted house!Of course, this turns out to be one of the worst ideas in history! Even though Hiroshi does not think that the place is haunted at first, he soon realizes that this place is not what he thought. The reason for this is that this house is the place that the Oni calls home!

What Is The Oni?

Well despite playing through the game on multiple occasions I am still not exactly sure. The Oni is some kind of blue demon/ghost/spirit and he does not want you in his home. He is going to pursue you around this huge property and stop at nothing to kill these dumb teenagers that are inside! The Oni looks pretty messed up, he is blue and he has clearly been working out and he has these horrible teeth and a weird expression on his face. What makes the Oni really, really scary is not actually his appearance. It is the sound that accompanies him. When you are in a room and the Oni is close the game has this horrible music that sounds like it was ripped out of a horror movie! You are just minding your business looking around and then when that music hits…… you need clean underwear.

What About The Gameplay?

Ok, so I have told you that Ao Oni is a game that is very scary, but is it fun to play? I think that Ao Oni is more like a puzzle game than anything else. You will need to explore the house as best you can and find various items. You then need to figure out where these items need to be used and solve the different puzzles you come across.Of course, the fact you are being stalked constantly by the Oni makes it very hard and unnerving. Making things even harder is that your dub buddies are also walking around the house and if the Oni captures them he turns them into another Oni! It does have some replay value as there are a couple of different endings for you to experience, one of which is really creepy.

Final Thoughts On Ao Oni

For horror fans, playing through Ao Oni is a no brainer. It is very unnerving and while having a little more story may have made the game even better. I do feel that not knowing does make the game scary. As far as being a puzzle games goes, Ao Oni is not the hardest and you will figure them out, but the puzzles are made that extra bit harder as you are always worried about when that creepy blue Oni is going to come and try and get you!

Final Score

8/10

Pros:

  • It really is scary
  • The Oni is a really cool creation
  • Fantastic if you are a fan of horror movies
  • The puzzles are fun
  • You have different endings to get

  • Some may want more back story to the Oni
