Sex, violence, torn-from-today’s-headlines shockers, fast cars, faster pussycats, psycho killers and kids run wild — throw a few (or all) of these ingredients into a pot, let the whole thing boil over, and you have the recipe for some tasty exploitation cinema. Subgenres: Hitmansploitation, Adrenalinesploitation, StathamsploitationJason Statham is a hitman who's injected with a delayed-response poison — 'some kind of Chinese synthetic shit' — that'll stop the heart without a constant supply of adrenaline. (Imagine Speed, only the bulletheaded British action star is the bus.) Never ones for underplaying, directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor literally cut to the chase and then keep chasing, with a constant supply of whooshing cars, thwapping bullets, smash cuts, cartoonishly canted angles and comedic gags. It's a cheap fix by design, as unapologetically crass and over-the-top as a Red Bull and coke, pornified breasts, and Statham's scowl-heavy mugging — all of which the film happily has in spades. Vowing to chart the sexual awakening of a woman from her early years to her thirties, the filmmaker's two-volume opus unfolds like a Candide of carnal knowledge; it also features copious scenes of explicit copulating (albeit with with digitally enhanced phalluses), nudity, spanking, and a skeezier than usual Shia LeBeouf, which is saying something. Arthouse bona fides or not, both of these installments double as feel-bad movies for the raincoat crowd — the sort of salacious movie in which every money shot is accompanied by a moral, and vice versa. Subgenres: Shockploitation, Hoboploitation, HauerploitationRutger Hauer, in the role he was born to play after he played Roy Batty, is a homeless itinerant with a dream who stumbles into the nightmare world of 'Scum Town.' What follows is like Yojimbo meets Dead Alive, a sick saga (over)stuffed with hooker murders, bum fights, decapitation by truck-pulled barbwire noose, a school bus full of kids set on fire and a reluctant hero who's finally pushed too far.
The film grew out of the prize-winning fake trailer in a 2007 promotional contest for Grindhouse, but whereas that movie and spinoffs like Machete wink self-consciously at exploitation cinema's grimy low-budget luridness, Hobo With a Shotgun revels in it with a straight face – or rather, with Hauer’s vein-bulging, wide-eyed grimace. Subgenres: Lonersploitation, Despairsploitation, GimmicksploitationA key movie of the New French Extremism, Gaspar Noe's Taxi Driver-ish tale of a seriously disturbed butcher pulls no punches (literally, in one horrific, virtually unwatchable scene); it's the type of movie made by someone who's determined to shock you by any means necessary. This unflinching portrait of life on the social margins, take-no-prisoners attitude and overall scuzziness has earned the film serious hatred and equally passionate defenders — not for nothing is this one of John Waters' favorite films of the last 20 years.
But what turns this movie from a mere endurance test into genuine modern-exploitation royalty is Noe's use of an age-old gimmick: a 'warning' that audiences have 30 seconds to leave the theater before the movie's climax. It's both a genius use of tongue-in-cheek ballyhoo and proof that Noe is one brilliant sick fuck. Subgenres: Mansonploitation, Outlawsploitation, Hillbillysploitation, ClownsploitationRob Zombie's cinematic output seems predicated on creating a sort of K-Tel's Grungy Flicks of the Seventies compilation, and his movies sometimes feel like their one baby-step away from being Grindhouse Karaoke 101. When he's on point, however — as in this tale of a serial-killer family and the redneck sheriff who's pursuing them — the rocker-turned-sleazeuteur can make you feel like you're watching a genuine drive-in movie from the Carter era. Riffing on everything from Last House on the Left-style roughies to couple-on-the-run quickies, this sequel to Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses is superior in every way.
And any film that puts exploitation icon Sid Haig in John Wayne Gacy-style clown makeup is fine by us. Subgenres: Revengesploitation, Ladsploitation, Britsploitation, GeriatricsploitationAs he's grown older, Michael Caine has zeroed in on grandfatherly mentor roles; in this gritty vigilante thriller, however, the veteran recalls the steely badasses of his Get Carter days with a vengeance. A retired Royal Marine, Harry lives in a London neighborhood beset by drugs and gang warfare; when his best bloke is murdered by local thugs, our elderly antihero meticulously hunts down the no-goodniks responsible. It's a melancholy portrait of mortality and grief — one hidden, however, beneath a grimy revenge story, complete with other odious cretins, righteous fury and gory kills.

Real gangster crime games. A Vegas buffet of down-and-dirty genre tropes, the twosome's tribute has it all: guns, guts, gratuitous lap dances, tough chicks, T&A, zombies, muscle cars, old-school stunts, and Rose McGowan's go-go dancer replacing her torn-off leg with a machine gun. ('There's gun fetishists and amputee fetishists,' in 2007. 'And between the two, I'm going to be really popular.'

Subgenres: Assploitation, Surgerysploitation, IthinkImgoingtothrowupsploitationTom Six's outrageous horror flick carries with a distinction that no other film on this list can boast: You don't even need to see it to feel repulsed. A deranged German surgeon captures tourists, sedates them and stitches them together ass-to-mouth. Yes, it's easy to write the movie off as little more than schlocky torture porn (which it certainly is). But Six puts such care, if that's the word, into illustrating the queasy filth onscreen; if nothing else, the way he's upped the ante with each subsequent sequel – leading to the daisy-chain of prison inmates in the third film – has solidified the franchise's place in the pantheon of perversion.
'People either like my work, or they absolutely hate it; there's nothing in between,' the director told in 2015. 'I'm very proud of that.' Subgenres: Revengesploitation, BowandarrowsploitationWriter-director Jeremy Saulnier and actor Macon Blair were struggling to break through in the film industry when they set out to make a low-budget thriller as their last best chance of being discovered. ('We thought it was likely going to be the end of our film careers,' in 2014.) Instead, this prickly character study-cum-revenge flick — in which Blair's soft-spoken drifter goes after his parents' killer once the latter is released from prison — turned these childhood buddies into genre-movie heroes. Blue Ruin's violence is gritty and intimate (bow-and-arrows and blades dominate), which makes the body count hit harder and the movie's cautionary tone toward bloodshed and vengeance all the more bracing.
